01AI Agents thesisApr 21, 2024

The next big breakthrough in AI is AI Agents. This is when AI goes from being used as an assistant to chat with, to using AI to accomplish complete tasks that a human might otherwise have to perform. This moves AI from a "read-only" operation to fundamentally a "read/write" operation. Ultimately, this brings us much closer to the full promise of AI, in particular in the enterprise, where AI can begin to complete any part of a workflow... 1. Businesses of all sizes will have access to resources and specialized skills they wouldn't otherwise tap into... 2. Companies will be able to re-allocate energy and talent to increasingly more differentiating work...

Here's Operator from OpenAI building a Due Diligence portal for an M&A transaction of TikTok on Box. The Agent creates a folder structure, the initial set of docs, and then researches on the web for data. In the future, AI Agents just do work for you in the background.

Coming off of meeting a couple dozen enterprises around the future of their AI strategies, here are a few notes on the state of AI in the enterprise right now. 1. The AI-first enterprise is emerging... 2. Enterprises want choice in their AI stack... 3. We will need more interoperability in AI... 4. Your AI stack will define who you can hire... 5. IT will increasingly be responsible for actually getting the work itself done... 6. We're still insanely early.

One piece of advice right now for anyone in college entering the workforce would be to get insanely good at using AI tools to get work done. You will look like a time traveler from the future to most companies, and likely can actually help the whole company modernize too. A big advantage any newer employees have right now is they haven't been wired to think how long something *should* take...

Not one Box product announcement in the top four. His most-engaged posts are about the wave that Box is surfing — AI agents, the future of enterprise work, and the people who are ready for it.
[ The thesis ]

Aaron isn't commenting on AI. He's documenting it from inside.

Five patterns, repeated with discipline · Observed across 259 posts
02 · The playbook / Five patterns, repeated the same way, every time

The system, reverse-engineered.

Every high-performing post he's shipped fits one of five templates. Learn them, steal them, ship them.

[ The meta-move ]

His best posts aren't about Box. They're about the thing Box is proof of.

In May 2025, Aaron posted a career piece for college graduates: get insanely good at AI tools. No product announcement. No Box mention. Just a clean, direct observation from someone who's navigated three tech waves.

“You will look like a time traveler from the future to most companies, and likely can actually help the whole company modernize too.”Aaron Levie · May 13, 2025 · 1,629 reactions

This is the meta-move. The post teaches the lesson Aaron himself demonstrates every time he publishes — that the people who understand the wave earliest are the ones who shape it. He's not writing about AI. He's modeling what it looks like to think in public about it, from inside the machine.

03 · The checklist / Ship your next post inside the system

Steal the playbook.

01
Pick one of the five patterns.
Don't blend. Thesis, field report, live proof, paradox, or framework. The pattern is the constraint.
The rule
02
Open with the macro shift.
Start with what's changing in the world, then zoom to the proof. Never start with the product.
The rule
03
Post before the consensus.
If everyone already agrees, you're too late. Ship the early take. Be wrong in public sometimes.
The rule
04
Anchor to a real artifact.
A demo, a meeting, a data point. Every claim needs a receipt from the real world.
The rule
05
Close with the implication.
One sentence on what this means for enterprise software. No hedge. No "interesting times."
The rule
06
Ship 3–4× a month.
Not daily. Not weekly. Aaron's sweet spot is deliberate, not constant.
